If you’ve found your way to this site, we hope it’s because you’re looking for a new, fresh Purim play to use this year for your congregation or school. And you’ve found it! We also assume that you already know what Purim is, that it’s a lot of fun, and that the Purim spiel can be the most fun part.

	Three years ago, that’s what we thought. But our synagogue had been buying Purimspiels for some time, and we were getting a little tired of them – Broadway parodies, Motown parodies, Beatles parodies … we thought, why doesn’t someone write some original songs just for Purim? Why not take all those styles and put them together in one show – a sort of “Joseph and His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” for Esther?
	So we went to work on it. We gave all the main characters singing parts – Esther, Mordechai, Achashverosh, Haman, Vashti – and we gave singing parts to minor characters too, to give more people a chance to perform. That means Zeresh (Haman’s wife), Bigthan and Teresh (the King’s eunuchs), and the women who compete to be queen all get their numbers too. And there’s a women’s swing quartet to recap the action, and plenty of singing for the chorus.
	It took us a while, but in the end, we had a real show. It can be done on its own in a little under an hour, or it can be done alternating with chapters of the Megillah reading on Erev Purim, the way we did it at Beth El Synagogue in Minneapolis. However you do it, we found that with some costumes, a little scenery, and (yes) a little rehearsal, “Vashti Was Right” can make Purim one of the highlights of your year.
